Folk Art
The vast scope of art in India is inseparably woven with the cultural history, religions, mythologies, and philosophies associated with the subcontinent.
We bring to you a small sampling of some of the folk art that has retained much of its traditional form and context over the centuries, like Mithila paintings from Madhubani, Patachitra from Orissa, Kalighat paintings from Calcutta, Phad paintings from Marwar, and Santhal paintings from the East. While the Madhubanis and Patachitras draw heavily from mythology, and the Phads and Kalighats mirror the cultural history of their regions, the Santhal paintings are true to the spirit of their earthy tribal life.
