Handkerchiefs, the ancestor of the pocket square, were popularised by King Richard II of England. Perfumed and embroidered handkerchiefs made from exotic materials including silk were passed on from generation to generation. In the 19th century, the two-piece suit became the mainstay of gentlemen’s fashion.
