The history of glass is intertwined with the history of colored glass as naturally occurring glass is always colored. In ancient times, colored glass took the form of exotic looking gemstones. Excavators chanced upon beautiful colored glass fragments in shades and hues of green, gold, violet and purple.

Stained glass was used extensively in jewellery in ancient times. Closer home, the production of colored glass in Southwest Asia came into being by the eighth century, at which time the alchemist Jābir ibn Hayyān, in Kitab al-Durra al-Maknuna, gave 46 recipes for producing coloured glass and described the technique of cutting glass into artificial gemstones.
