Tribal Craft

Here is a sampling of beautiful Dhokra sculptures crafted with primitive simplicity and enchanting folk motifs by metal smiths from the rural parts of Eastern and Central India.

Dhokra is scrap brass or copper based alloy sculptures using the lost-wax casting technique that has been used in India for over 4,000 years. One of the earliest known lost-wax artefacts is the dancing girl of Mohenjo-daro.

The lost-wax hollow casting process consists of developing a clay core which is then covered by a layer of wax composed of pure bee’s wax and nut oil. The wax is then shaped and carved in all its details and then covered with more clay. When the clay is cooked, the wax melts away to be replaced by the molten alloy. The outer layer of clay is then chipped off and the metal icon is polished to perfection.
