Black coarse Cotton Begampur Saree

Mathapar Sarees which are plain sarees woven with colored borders, and also plain cotton sarees with dobby border designs using 60s and 80s cotton yarn is traditionally known as Begampuri Saree. This distinctive thick cotton weave was revived after 70 years under the Integrated Handloom Development Scheme by the Begampur Handloom Cluster Development Society. Originally worn by the village women working in the fields, it has now become a style statement for the elite connoisseur. The once plain and coarse weave has now been enhanced with design motifs inspired by the terracotta temples of Bishnupur. These new designs were brought in by a researcher Kaizad Sampat who works closely with the weavers in the area.
